The Mateus Palace located just outside of Vila Real is one of Portugal's great Baroque buildings. Built in the 18th century it features the works of celebrated architect Nicolau Nasoni. The palace is set in a large estate and gardens.
It is through Mateus Rose, the cheap wine popular in the 70s that the palace is perhaps best known. It is the mansion on the label that lends the brand its pedigree image!
