Getting away in winter promises many things; a sense of adventure and for many a chance to enjoy some warm sun, after the doom and gloom of the colder months. Off-peak holidays are a good idea, because they are usually cheaper too, so the pool of options may be opened up slightly more to suit your budget.
For somewhere with a milder climate you could visit various European countries such as Greece and Portugal. Although it may be cooler than in peak summer months, Portugal’s beach weather will still certainly be far warmer than in the UK, and offer a medicinal and rich escape of food, wine, scenery and culture.
Portugal offers countless activities such as water sports, golf and perhaps most notably wine tasting. The country is not only famous for its port but is establishing a reputation for its light wines, made from various native grapes. The food and drink of Portugal, to a certain extent, can be quite distinct and will often fuse unusual combinations of food such as meat and shellfish to create dishes.
The country is perhaps most famed for its use of Peri Peri, a Brazilian spice that is commonly used to flavour Shrimp and Chicken and that is now used more and more frequently across the globe. There are extensive shopping opportunities in Portugal, both from more commercial and culturally diverse shopping centres situated inside and outside the larger cities which will typically offer popular international brands but also there are plentiful shops with a more traditional Portuguese feel selling Portuguese products such as antiques and leather goods, these are especially common within older neighbourhoods of towns and cities.
One of Portugal’s more popular destinations is Madeira. With a culturally woven history that goes back as far as the 15th century, it comprises a stunning volcanic landscape and a rich maritime background. Its idyllic serenity doesn’t mean it can’t offer a fun-packed nightlife for those wanting to dance the night away either; the harbour is lined with bars and places to meet and greet. And, for those interested in outdoor activity, it is worth remembering that Madeira’s warm Mediterranean Sea boasts some enviable swell, attracting fans of surf the world over.
